Meet Ashley and Learn to Give Back a Little

Ashley is 12 years old.  She is a child of Down’s Syndrome. Down’s syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is a chromosomal condition caused by the presence of all or part of an extra chromosome 21.  The Center for Disease Control estimates that about 691 children are born in the US, every year, with Down’s.  Down’s syndrome is NOT so crippling as to make life not worth living from the inner perspective of the person with the condition.  Ashley is proof of that.  She is a very calm, happy child.  Ashley attends school and may one day hold a paying job.  Many Down’s Syndrome children graduate high school and even attend universities.  There are programs to help train them for paid work.  That is where we come in.

Last year, Ashley raised $500 to help in the research and to promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome.  She hopes to raise even more this year. Ashley will be at the 15th Annual Buddy Walk where Every Buddy is a Hero on October 20, 2012.  The Buddy Walk is being held at Centennial Park in Nashville, TN.  The event opens at 9 AM and the walk will start at 11 AM.

Please register to walk at www.dsamt.org or at www.firstgiving.org/buddywalk2012 .  Another way to help is to donate to Ashley’s cause on Ashley’s page for the Down Syndrome Association of Middle Tennessee.  Ashley loves Nickelback so her team name is: Ashley’s Nickelback Crew.

If you attend the walk, you will also be entertained with games, crafts, contests, prizes, food trucks, lots of vendors and more!  This is a great event for a great cause.

My Sister’s Mustache ~ I’m Still Laughing

Years ago I tried a product that was supposed to just ‘rub the hair off your legs’.  Anything was worth a try to not have to shave and most women understand that.  Well, after a few rubs, I noticed my leg was a little tender so I looked at this little black pad that I was using to rub the hair off.

To my surprise, this little black piece of paper was really smooth (very fine) sandpaper!  Oh my goodness!  At this point, I realized that I either had really hard to remove hair or really sensitive skin.  I choose the latter! LOL

My sister came for a visit this summer and as most discussions women have, the subject of hair removal came up.  She started telling me about this pad she used on her ‘mustache’ area.  I was laughing before she was even finished because even after several years, I remember the feeling on my leg (I’m still laughing but don’t want to tell her that).  She goes on to say how it actually burned her upper lip area to raw skin and she hated to leave the house.  LOL *cough, sorry.

When she arrived at the school to pick up her kids, they too were surprised at mom’s mustache, especially how long it remained.  LOL *cough, sorry.  She also told me that it had to scab over and heal and that it took almost a month for her ‘mistake’ with the hair removal pad to heal.  LOL *cough, sorry.

Of course, I informed her that it was only very fine sandpaper and when I tried it on my legs, it was not worth the discomfort it caused.  I can only imagine the way the burn on her upper lip felt after she sandpapered the heck out of it.  LOL * cough, sorry.

Recently, on the View, Whoopie Goldberg says she loves the Smooth Away Hair Removal System – As Seen on TV .  I, for one, am not giving them another shot with my ultra sensitive skin, but if you want to try them (I would suggest reading the instructions very carefully and moisturizing well afterwards) they are available on Amazon for just $3.99 with free shipping.  Amazon prices change often so remember this is the price I found at the time of the original posting.

If you do try them, please let us know how your experience was.  I promise not to laugh.  Really. :)

Woman Locked in Bedroom for at Least 2 Years ~ That’s Just Crazy

On the top floor of an apartment complex, a known gang member and drug dealer kept his girlfriend locked up for at least two years.  Police in NJ are saying it could have been up to 10 years.  And you think when you waste a few minutes you can never get that time back.

Only one neighbor admits to ever seeing the woman, in all that time.  He refused to give his name for fear of his safety.  Other neighbors ‘know nothing’.  How convenient.  One maintenance worker said he remembers the woman because she ‘cussed him out’ when he was doing his work.

Supposedly, he let her out of the bedroom, at times, when he was home.  She had also been seen getting into her captive’s auto several times.

Thousands of dollars of drugs were found in the apartment building during a search.

I will say that police did NOT find her padlocked, it is just believed to be the case.  You can see the whole crazy story HERE.

Put 600 People in One Room and How Many Have a Clue?

In this day and age of technology and speedy conversations, do you really think about what you type or does it just make it easier to get ‘no’ point across?

Doctors, police, teachers and more all agree that teens use the texting form of communication for things they wouldn’t say in a normal ‘real’ conversation.  It is the barrier of the computer or the telephone that keeps them one step away from reality and what words can really accomplish.

However, do not assume that it is only teens that abuse electronic forms of communication and use it with no sense, whatsoever.  Adults are just as guilty and could possibly be worse.  The experience I have had with adults is they just don’t know when to stop.  Talk about beating a dead horse; if you keep texting, emailing or messaging someone even after the conversation has died, as an ADULT, consider yourself in the territory of harassment.  Know when it is time to move on and then maybe, just maybe, you can teach a teen the same lessons.  Your actions do speak louder than words when it comes to children.

Life is full of rules and standards to go by.  There are things meant as simple questions, easy comments and innocent quests.  Take them for what they are and move on.  Not everything requires a ‘side’ to be taken, a stand to be made or arms puffed up to make a point.

Sometimes, being the bigger person means dropping it all and SILENTLY walking away.  My question: Can you be silent and drop it or do you beat it to death?
